Governor Culver works overtime on his beer belly…

his condition of the state speech, and state budget will just have to wait….

With the economic outlook of our state in shambles, there is no doubt that Governor Culver’s condition of the state speech is probably going to be a downer. Nonetheless, this is probably the most important speech he will give. So I was a little surprised to see his preparation involved drinking beer with Bill Knapp at 11 p.m. at a bar last night.

  2. I am guessing he drinks Miller - anything to try to placate to the Unions.

Word to the wise Republicans: avoid Miller products - they are union made. Drink coors.

  4. I don't know Krusty - I think your analysis should have said he's a "glass half full" kinda guy.

Oh wait...His beer is almost gone. So much for being half full.

  5. Most times, when the governor gives his condition of the state address, he comes in with a big binder and reads it.

This year, I think he'll open his folder and a bunch of beer-stained bar napkins will fall out!

The only question is, will the scribbles be in his handwriting...or Bill Knapp's?

  6. I think criticizing the guy for having a beer is pretty silly. Plenty of other things to hit him on.

  15. Actually I was told that a state trooper was taken to Mercy Medical Center last night around midnight. Apparently he was Gov. Culver in a state owned SUV when he was overcome by a potent substance. It is unknown but the substance was and the trooper has been released. This morning we learned the First Lady didn’t let Culver sleep in the bedroom because of “toxic beer farts” the governor was found in the parlor this morning at 6 am. It is not believed that these two incidents are connected.

  16. Our Governor hard at work planning the future of Iowa with fat-cat real estate tycoons!

  17. they must have been discussing the real estate Knapp wants to get to develop for free via eminent domain, and/or they were discussing farm policy and how knapp can get more money for free (farm subsidy) on that farmland he lets sit waiting to develop it.

  18. The State chair race made Politico. Matt plans to advocate for no messaging at all. Just websites and stuff. Isn't that what has brought us to this debaucle in the first place? Looks like Matt intends to be same ole same ole.

    No change here it appears.

“[Strawn] doesn’t look at the party chair job as being the person to try to dictate the philosophical bent, and I don’t think Danny does either,” said Dave Roederer, who served as chair for McCain’s Iowa campaign, and for President George W. Bush’s 2004 effort there.

“I believe our issue is more mechanics than it is philosophy at this point in time,” he said. “Currently the Republican Party, both on a national and on a local basis, is spending more time arguing over philosophy. And frankly, that’s the easy thing to do.”

  19. "Doug Gross, a former gubernatorial candidate and chief of staff to Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, said he thought Strawn had an edge in Saturday’s vote, in part due to his distance from recent party infighting.

Iowa Republicans have been divided ideologically in recent years, between social conservatives such as Scheffler and Carroll and moderates such as former Congressman Jim Leach.

“In some respects, being an outsider helps when the forces of the party are at each other’s throats,” Gross said. “I don’t think [Strawn] carries a lot of that baggage.”

Strawn, in an interview with Politico, painted the next chairman’s task as one of rebuilding the party’s “infrastructure from the ground up, fundraising in a difficult environment and aggressively recruiting quality candidates.”

While he has had to work harder to introduce himself to Iowa Republicans, Strawn is not without a significant profile in the state: he’s a co-owner of the Iowa Barnstormers, an arena football team, along with former GOP House candidate Jeff Lamberti."

    From the Politico

  20. Dave Roderer doesn't think messaging is our problem. Dave....we have no message. That's a problem. Dave......dave....wtf?

"I believe our issue is more mechanics than it is philosophy at this point in time,” he said."

  21. The scc is getting played and they don't even know it.

Doug Gross gets his guy in there again! Life goes on. We don't fight with the democrats. We don't promote a message or explain our philospy. We just keep doing the same thing.

  22. I'd like to know how that works - Matt. How do you recruit great candidates when they don't know what they are running on? What do you tell them - you can make a killer living if you win. You'll be rich! Please be our candidate. Don't worry. You don't have to take a position on anything. If the press asks you why you are running, use the phrase Danny Carroll used with the Gazette - "I decline to comment".

You don't even have to know the issues. Run on flower pot placements in the town square - that one worked before, so try that one if you get pressed.

  23. Bill Clinton's Treasury Secretary with the Ivy League Education got fired today for running CitiGroup into the ground. Rubin doesn't know how the treasury works.

If it's the economy stupid, don't we have an opening here?

    FOXBusinessBuzz

Robert Rubin, one of the highest-profile executives at Citigroup resigned from his role as a senior counselor at the New York-based bank that needed a massive government rescue last year.

Rubin, who joined Citi in 1999 after serving as Treasury secretary under President Clinton, resigned his post effective immediately. Rubin has received heavy criticism over his role at the financial conglomerate that has lost $20 billion over the past year.

Citi's stock, which has lost roughly three-quarters of its value over the past 12 months, extended its losses when the news broke Friday afternoon.

  24. Boy, talk about pay for play. I could have ruined that company much quicker for far less pay.

Rubin, who has received $115 million in pay, is "tired of it" and plans to focus on his non-profit work and other outside interests, The Wall Street Journal reported.

  25. the democrats all across the united states are vulnerable on pay for play. the bill richardson scandal is a pay for play on a scale that makes blogo look like a naiver beginner.

The pay for play involves how municipal/state bonds are handled - hint - gov culver wanting to bond our way out of our debt.

This may very well be an issue in Iowa - who knows? Maybe that's what Knapp and the Big Lug were discussing?? How have these contracts worked in Iowa? Which law firms do our government - culver - use? Who are those people in Iowa working with Chet to bond our way out of debt?

It has taken Gov Richardson down, so far.

It's a big deal and we have a nice opening if someone wanted to use it.

  29. Anon @ 6:02,

You missed the punchline in that piece. Rubin "plans to focus on his non-profit work & other outside interests"?

    Non-profit? Non-freakin-profit???

I may not be a Harvard Business School graduate here, but I'd venture to say that losing $20 BILLION in 12 months time is about as Non-Profit as you can get.
