Palin wins, Senate bailout bill full of pork.

Most people will tell you that the voters vote for the person running for President, not the VP nominee. I agree, but one can not overlook what Sarah Palin has meant to the McCain campaign. It was my belief that if Palin flopped last night the McCain campaign would be on life support, thankfully the McCain campaign let her take off the training wheels and be herself.

Palin not only held her own, she won the debate.

The main street media is never going to like Palin. She uses phrases they can’t stand like, gee williker, gosh, and say it ain’t so Joe. What the media fails to realize is this is what you hear on Main Street. Palin communicates directly to your average American, something more politicians should do. For a woman who’s been in the national spotlight for 5 weeks, I’m impressed with her.

While this debate will help the McCain campaign, his campaign still has an up-hill battle in the last month of the campaign. I also think that McCain’s support of the Senate Bailout plan doesn’t do anything for him either. Sure something needed to get done, and yes Obama voted for it as well, but this bill is loaded with Pork Barrel projects something McCain is adamantly against.

Does this sound like Main Street to you?

Sec. 502. Provisions related to film and television productions.

Sec. 503. Exemption from excise tax for certain wooden arrows designed for use by children.

Sec. 504. Income averaging for amounts received in connection with the Exxon Valdez litigation.

Sec. 317. Seven-year cost recovery period for motorsports racing track facility.

Sec. 308. Increase in limit on cover over of rum excise tax to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Sec. 314. Indian employment credit.

Sec. 315. Accelerated depreciation for business property on Indian reservations.

Didn’t think so.

  1. I completely understand your point regarding the bailout, or rescue, but what about the businesses that count on credit? This is affecting ag business in a severe way...not to mention small car dealerships, etc. I hate all the extras, but if we do absolutely nothing, then what? I love when things are black and white, but this just isn't one of those times.

  2. Anon 12:18,

The problem here is that essentially this bill is the same damn thing that was shot down the other day...except loaded up with a bunch of pork.

This is going to cost well more than 700 billion..this is going to be a more than 1 trillion dollar bailout.

No other alternatives were even given consideration here...

Proposals like changing the mark to market accounting rules..temporarily removing capital gains taxes, etc..none of it was given an ounce of consideration.

There was PLENTY that could have been done..without putting taxpayer's dollars at risk...

  3. I can't speak for members of the media, but personally I don't take issue with Palin's style. It can be genial and comforting to people who've been alienated by the arcane language of politics. I am, however, concerned with her content. While she certainly didn't "flop" in the sense of floundering at questions she didn't know how to field, I think she displayed little grasp on the specifics of many issues facing the country. Biden communicated his experience and understanding of, in particular, complex foreign policy issues, and Palin provided a more general overview of her positions and values without really displaying any kind of applicable knowledge or solutions.

People should certainly vote for a ticket they feel reflects their values, but what are values without the ability and foresight to execute them effectively?

  4. Palin kind of reminds me of GW Bush. "Folksy" when he's talking to you - but not too impressive in terms of IQ.

  5. Cedar-

I have to take issue with all this "pork-hating

Here in Iowa, Republican Tom Latham, who is the senior member of our congressional delegation, also has the most pork, I have seen the review of it, some are decent things, some arent so decent.

It is truly a two way street, If we do not have earmarks, we are taking money that could be used for worthwhile projects away, not only that, but we are paying for other states pork, and lets face it, the only way Iowan's are going to get federal money for needed projects is through earmarks.

And if we are paying for other states earmarks, ( bridge to nowhere, etc) Why shouldnt we earmark some of OUR Tax dollars too!

  6. Biden lied and lied and lied. Most modern-day Democrats have no regard for the truth and they cannot EVER be believe nor can the MSM.

  7. Anon 9:50.

This bill went from being 5 pages long..to being one that was over 500 pages in length in less than a week.

You can't sit there..and seriously tell me that it was necessary for example..that it was vital to make sure the .39 tax on wooden arrows had to be removed in order to pass this bill.

You want to bring home money for your district..great.. put it up in a separate spending bill..

This was supposed to be an Emergency Economy Stimulus Bill or whatever..

The fact still remains that Congress took NO time to examine alternatives..look for other solutions to the problem.

They just decided to take our taxpayer dollars..and throw it at the problem and once again hope it will go away..

I'm glad Latham and King had the guts to stand against this crap sandwich of a bill. Unfortunately, we've got other GOP folks who need to borrow some testicular fortitude from them.

  8. We're on the verge of breaking things open. Our chances have never looked better to elect that filibuster-proof Senate majority to help Barack Obama put this country back on the right course.

All the polls are breaking our way. As I write this, Democratic candidates are leading in no fewer than six races for current Republican seats. And we're seeing a marked trend of our trailing candidates closing the gap in key battleground states.

Things are looking so strong that the DC-insider newspaper Roll Call recently published the headline "New Senate Polls Show GOP Slipping." The nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report just upgraded its ranking of four of our races. For the first time, they now favor our candidates in Oregon and Colorado.

Our proven campaign strategy is working. In the last 10 days, the DSCC has spent more than $9 million of your money in eight states to air TV ads that expose third-party lies and hold Republicans accountable for eight years of failure and incompetence.

  9. Kudos to Latham & King for sticking to their guns and listening to Iowans. It's good to know that someone in Washington is.

  10. Hope Depot Joe sure did offer much detail much of it true, but significant parts were not accurate.

  11. Bailout aside, the election this November will determine the future of our country. It will be a choice between a far-left politician (masquerading as a centrist) and a principled conservative leader on whom we can rely.

My friend, Iowa's own Jay Heine, is deep in the trenches working to solidify conservative support for Senator McCain. This election will largely depend on how hard we work. If we stay at home, Obama wins. That's it.

So if you haven't already, I suggest you contact Iowa state headquarters at 515-418-9270 and offer your services to ensure the next occupant of the White House is a conservative.

  12. Oh he's in deep something alright. The trenches though? Not so much.

  13. Palin wins!?! Ha ha ha...

Can you tell by the lead Obama has in all nationwide polls?

Or is it by his lead in the Bush-won states of Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio and Virginia?

or is it his 12 point lead in Iowa that will bring more Legislative Republicans out of office in a year you hoped to rebound in?

I must admit, I am surprised, The smoking ban should have killed the Iowa Dems, but not so...

It's hillarious watching you squirm Krusty!
